Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Sable, fretty and sem of caltraps Or, on a chief Gules an expanded compass Argent.  Attached below and to the sides of the shield a tripartite Gold scroll inscribed DESIGN BUILD DESTROY in Red letters.

Symbolism
Scarlet and white are the colors used for Engineers.  The compass symbolizes reconnaissance and intelligence.  The fretty alludes to the building of roads, floating bridges, landing strips, etc., and the sem of caltraps (a weapon used in early warfare to impede the enemy) to the construction and placement of deceptive devices.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 3 May 1967.  It was rescinded on 27 December 1974.
